Artist's Thoughts
King Benjamin had established peace in the land and the temple was built. There was the kind of spiritual awakening that came with the peace and joy that only comes from obedience to the commandments. It is evident that King Benjamin was not only a leader of leaders but also a great friend to the common people. Service seemed to be his emphasis and he wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty to show that. Like all great leaders, he taught mostly by his actions. You can sense the love and respect the people had for this great man. This admiration for him became completely evident as thousands flocked in from all around to catch a glimpse and ear his words. It is fascinating to me that in an age that must have lacked in broad communications, how many people turned out for this early general conference. His sermon at the temple in front of thousands must have been a truly spectacular spiritual event. I wanted to create the feeling of spiritual energy in the air with the doves fluttering in the background and people buzzing all around. It was important to me to include the scribe and messengers to show just how important and serious it was to the king to get this message to all the people.
While the scriptures do not refer to the kings wife, we all know that behind every great man is a great woman. For this reason I took the liberty to represent his wife faithfully by his side, providing him the support and love he needed.
